Previous case results

Real Cases. Real Outcomes.

These are actual results from my practice. Every case turns on its own facts, and no outcome is ever promised, but this is the standard I work toward.

Dismissal

Domestic Violence Assault

My client was offered a plea to the charge of aggravated assault with probation. He hired me instead, and we secured a dismissal.

Dismissal

Aggravated Assault

My client faced 1.5 to 3 years in prison for recklessly discharging a firearm in an apartment. His charges were dismissed and did not affect his ability to keep the professional licenses his job depends on.

Dismissal

DUI

My client was facing an Extreme DUI in Phoenix Municipal Court. We got the case dismissed entirely. No jail time and no DUI conviction went on the client's record.

Past results do not guarantee future outcomes. Every case is different and is judged on its own merits. See more case results.

Salwin Law Group

Arrested? Charged? Get an Honest Read First.

If you were arrested or charged with a crime, you are probably worried and uncertain about what happens next. The State is already building its case against you. What you need is not a billboard slogan; you need someone who knows exactly how that case is being built, and where it will be weak.

That is what I do. As a former prosecutor and a graduate of Harvard Law School, I put my experience on the other side to work for your defense. Your case will not be passed off to another attorney. The person you talk to on the first consultation is the person who stands next to you in court.

"One call ends the stress. I will tell you honestly where you stand, what your options are, and how we take back control of your life." Stewart Salwin · Founder, Salwin Law Group

“I'm Stewart Salwin, founder of Salwin Law Group. I defend people accused of crimes across the Phoenix metro area, and I give every client the same thing I would give a close friend in trouble: the truth about their case, and a strategy to see them through it.”

How I can help

The Cases I Defend Across the Valley

Whatever you are facing, the first step is the same: understand the charge, understand the process, and understand your options. These are the charges that come through my door.

The deepest bench

DUI Defense

Thousands of DUIs handled across both sides of the courtroom, from first offenses to extreme and aggravated charges. Start with my Phoenix DUI lawyer page.

Not a normal ticket

Criminal Speeding & Traffic

Arizona makes certain speeds a crime on their own. I defend criminal speeding and criminal traffic charges statewide, including for out-of-state drivers. See my criminal speeding page.

High stakes at home

Domestic Violence

Cases where the story is rarely as simple as the police report, and where a conviction follows you into jobs, housing, and custody. These charges deserve a careful, complete defense.

From possession to sales

Drug Crimes

Possession, possession for sale, and manufacturing charges. The difference between those labels is often the difference between probation and prison, and it is where the defense work lives.

When tempers become charges

Assault & Violent Crimes

From misdemeanor assault to aggravated felony charges. I prosecuted these cases in the Major Crimes Division; I know how the state builds them and where they break.

Your name is the case

False Accusations & Serious Felonies

When an accusation alone can end a career, the defense starts the day you call, not the day charges are filed. What you do before charges matters enormously.

What you can expect

How I Work a Case

I specifically limit my caseload so every client gets the time their case deserves. Here is what that looks like in practice.

The Strategy01

A defense built for your facts

We start with your goals. I analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the state's case against you, and you hear all the possible options so you can make informed decisions at every step. No cookie-cutter defense, because no two cases are the same.

The Investigation02

I read the file like the prosecutor I was

The facts of your case get carefully investigated so I can craft the best possible defense: the police report, the evidence, the procedure. Then I present the legal and factual review of my investigation to the prosecutor and fight to get charges lowered or dismissed.

The Communication03

You hear from me, not a case manager

You will always know what is going on and what happens next. My clients can text me and email me directly, and I return communications as quickly as I can. This is a confusing time; I take the mystery out of the legal process.

The Courtroom04

Prepared to try it

Most cases resolve in negotiation. But if the state's offer does not serve you, I have personally tried more than 70 criminal cases, and I am a fearless advocate for my clients in the courtroom. We do not accept a bad deal because trial is inconvenient.

5
Years · Maricopa County Attorney's Office

I learned the playbook from inside

I spent five years as a prosecutor, most of it in the Major Crimes Division working the most serious felony cases. When I read your file, I see what the prosecutor sees: where the case is strong, and where it is going to break.

2014
The year I switched sides

Since then, one client at a time

I opened my own practice to defend people the way I would want to be defended: personally, honestly, and from the first phone call to the resolution. Your case is mine. It does not get passed down the hall.

The State is already building its case. One call starts building yours.

Who You Are Actually Hiring

I'm Stewart Salwin. I grew up in Phoenix, studied at Georgetown, and graduated from Harvard Law School. I spent five years as a prosecutor at the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, and since 2014 I have defended the same kinds of cases I used to bring, most of them DUIs.

I started my own firm because I wanted to work with people I can actually help, and to see every case through from the first phone call to the resolution. What I put out into the world is a representation of who I am, and I treat every case that way.

Practically, that means you get me. My clients text me and email me directly, and I return communications as quickly as I can. When we talk about your case, you are hearing the strengths and the weaknesses from the person who read the file.

"It's satisfying to see something from start to finish. To take somebody from one point in the journey to the other point of the journey, and for them to be very, very pleased and happy with it." Stewart Salwin

Questions People Ask Before They Call

When should I talk to a criminal defense attorney?
As early as possible, and ideally before you talk to anyone else about your case. The biggest mistakes happen before a lawyer is involved: talking to police, giving the state more evidence, or letting deadlines slip. Even if you never hire me, one call tells you what can be done and what it makes sense to do next.
What happens on the first call?
You tell me what happened, and I listen. Then I give you a frank, honest assessment: the technical range of what you are facing, the realistic range for facts like yours, and what the process looks like from here. Most people feel better after that first conversation, not because I sugarcoat anything, but because a real map beats imagined worst cases.
Will my case go to trial?
Most criminal cases resolve through negotiation with the prosecutor, and that negotiation is where a former prosecutor's read of the case earns its keep. But if the state's offer does not serve you, I have personally tried more than 70 criminal cases and I am prepared to try yours. We never accept a bad deal because trial is inconvenient.
Can charges be reduced or dismissed?
Often, depending on the facts, the evidence, and the court, and no honest attorney promises it in advance. Charges get dismissed when the state's case has real problems: constitutional violations, evidence that does not hold up, procedure that was not followed. Finding those problems is exactly what the first review of your file is for.
How much does a criminal defense lawyer cost?
It depends on the charge and the complexity of the case. I charge a fair price for white-glove representation where the attorney you hire is the attorney who works the case, and the first consultation is free. Bring what you remember and any paperwork you received, and I will map the realistic range before you decide anything.
